Organization speed ≠ individual speed

Organization speed ≠ individual speed

Madhuri Duggirala, VP of the gTech Ads Solutions org at Google once said in a summit that organizations must keep pivoting and sprinting, all the time, nonstop. Otherwise, they won’t be the leaders in their fields of business. BUT, that doesn’t mean that all individuals must be pivoting and sprinting all the time. That’s the power of an organisation. While one person or team is performing a at high speed and capacity, another might not be that efficient at that time. And eventually they swap positions.

This sounded really interesting to me. I’ve always seen leaders trying to elevate the moral of their teams saying impactful phrases like “we are the fastest delivering team” or “100% of our projects we’re finished on time or even before”. And while great, that always felt like some unnecessary pressure that might end up crushing the individuals eventually. But Madhuri’s philosophy manages to keep the org’s high speed development while being welcoming and respectful to the individual contributors.
